Challenge
Develop an immersive digital prototype for an automated retail kiosk in China that showcased the natural ingredients behind SK-II’s PITERA formula. The experience combined an experimental transparent glass display with synchronized robotic mechanics to create a captivating retail installation. Matching video to the mechanics required camera matching using measurements and an adaptive approach that could be modified up until the final testing and presentation and working with mechanical engineers who were constantly changing and adapting schematics as we worked to address technical limitations for a prototype that would have to stand up to rigorous international standards, testing and the abuse that comes with basic use.

Approach
I created a 3D animated simulation of rice, yeast, and water pouring from physical cups into a mixing bowl, augmented with 2D steam effects and motion graphics to enhance realism. Working closely with mechanical engineers, I helped design a timing system that precisely synchronized the digital particle simulations with the robotic movement of the physical cups, resulting in a seamless blend of physical automation and digital animation.

Role

  • 3D Animation & Motion Design
  • Particle Simulation
  • Motion Graphics
  • Cross-functional Creative Collaboration
  • Technical Animation Synchronization

Outcome
The prototype demonstrated how digital storytelling and mechanical engineering could work together to transform a retail kiosk into an engaging brand experience. By aligning animation with robotic hardware, the installation created the illusion of real ingredients being mixed live, illustrating the craftsmanship behind SK-II’s signature PITERA ingredient and informing future experiential retail concepts. A modified version that was further developed ultimately shipped because the glass tv would not be available in time to ship the product.

Here’s a gallery of samples from the prototype presentation. Frame 1 is a sample of my 3D product render of the skincare bottle for the video, which is not a physical product, but needed to look photo real. Even frames are the prototype installation. Odd frames are just the video overlay, with the mechanics missing, to show what’s real and what is video.
